In the summer of 1997, a group of seven young Chicana/Latina women brought together by UCSD’s Summer Bridge program, realized that there was a need for an on-campus support organization that met their interests. They worked together to form an organization by the name of Feminine Leaders in Outreach for La Raza, also known as F.L.O.R. Having experienced the lack of familia on campus, they knew that there had to be a number of other Chicana/Latinas who felt similarly, that needed extra support adjusting to college life.
On March 9th, 1999, their efforts were made into reality and the Gamma Chapter of Phi Lambda Rho Sorority, Inc., was brought into existence by twelve founding sisters, making it the first of the Latina sororities at UCSD.
